Sam Larner went to sea from Winterton as a boy and spent decades on luggers and steam trawlers until ill health brought him ashore in 1933. The BBC producer Philip Donnellan found him in 1956, and he became a voice of the radio ballad Singing the Fishing. Ewan MacColl drew on his life for The Shoals of Herring, and a blue plaque marks his Winterton home.
