For the Irish Folklore Commission he noted nearly two thousand songs and tunes across Ireland and the Hebrides, then recorded players such as Willie Clancy for Radio Éireann. At the BBC he helped gather music from all four nations for the programme As I Roved Out. Widely regarded as one of the great uilleann pipers, he helped found Na Píobairí Uilleann.
