Born John Reidy, he wrote the celebrated score for the film Mise Éire and then formed Ceoltóirí Chualann in 1961, bringing arranged traditional music into the concert hall. Many regard him as the most influential figure in the 1960s revival of Irish music. He later settled in Cúil Aodha, where he founded a choir and wrote a Mass in Irish still sung today.
