Steve Roud began the Roud Folk Song Index around 1970 as a personal project, giving every song collected from oral tradition a number shared by all its versions. It now holds hundreds of thousands of references and is used by singers and scholars everywhere. He was Local Studies Librarian for Croydon and Honorary Librarian of the Folklore Society, and his books include Folk Song in England and The English Year.
