Tom Lewis grew up in Gloucester and spent 24 years in the Royal Navy, mostly on submarines. His song The Last Shanty won a services folk competition in 1980, and after leaving the navy he built a singing career in Canada before returning to England. Songs such as Marching Inland have become chorus standards.
