People from round Wellington in Shropshire used to climb the Wrekin on the Sunday after May Day, and on the three Sundays following, to drink a health to all friends round the Wrekin. A correspondent wrote to Hone in 1826 that drunkenness and worse had become so common at the gathering that the magistrates had discouraged it, and it was going into decay. The toast to all friends round the Wrekin is still a Shropshire saying.
