Gloucester marked its deliverance from the royalist siege of 1643 with a thanksgiving rhyme cut in freestone over the city gate on the road to Nympsfield. Aubrey remembered the words, which bade the citizens always remember the tenth of September and give God the glory. He listed the raising of the siege under that date, and noted that by his time the walls had been pulled down.
