On the first Monday after Michaelmas, when Kidderminster’s magistrate and officers took office, each of them threw apples to the crowd from their windows or from the town hall, often twenty or thirty baskets in all. Thousands gathered, apprentices and servants claimed the day off, and while they waited the crowd flung old shoes and cabbage stalks at each other. Any stranger who rode through the town at the wrong moment had the whole crowd aiming at him. A lady from the town described it to Hone.
