Chairing the lord at Easthampstead

At Easthampstead, near Bagshot Heath, there was once a custom when a new lord of the manor came in. The inhabitants carried him in a chair on their shoulders round the bounds of the manor, starting and ending on a hill. There they took him out of the chair and struck him on the backside with twigs, after which lord and people dined together and spent the rest of the day in merriment.
