The Year Book noted a custom still kept among ordinary people in Wales. If John Thomas had a son named David, the boy was known as David John, taking his father’s Christian name as his surname rather than the family name Thomas. The note was printed beside a legal piece on the right of anyone to change their name as they pleased.
