Every September about ninety Filey fishermen, sometimes with their wives and children, left the village for the herring fishing at Yarmouth. Before they went, each boat sent a piece of sea beef ashore to the friends they wished well at the public houses. This made a supper at which those going and those staying met in good fellowship. A Bridlington correspondent sent it to Hone in October 1827.
