Greenock opened its fair with great ceremony on the first Thursday in July, and again on the fourth Tuesday in November. Offices and businesses closed for the day, and every lad went to see the show. Hazlitt’s correspondent Allan Park Paton wrote in 1897 that the fair still went on, though he doubted it did the town any good.
