Among the folk lore of St James’s Day Chambers gives a Herefordshire saying about the county’s hop crop. Until the saint’s day had come and gone, nobody could say whether there would be a crop of hops or none at all. Chambers takes it as a sign of how uncertain that local harvest was known to be.
