Killing the Pig by the Moon

A Suffolk correspondent told Chambers it was thought unlucky there to kill a pig in the wane of the moon, for the pork would then waste in the boiling. He had known the shrinking of bacon in the pot blamed on the pig having been killed while the moon was decreasing, and had known a pig’s death put off or hurried on so that it fell while the moon was on the increase.
