Lady Howard of Fitzford, a beautiful and wealthy Devon woman of the time of James I, was said to have been cruel to her only daughter and to have married four times. Her punishment after death was to run every night in the shape of a hound from the gateway of Fitzford to Okehampton Park and back, bringing a single blade of grass in her mouth. She had to keep this up until the park was bare, which would not be until the end of the world.
