Old almanacs kept a table of the seasons when weddings were allowed. Pond’s almanac for 1678 says marriage comes in on 13 January and goes out at Septuagesima until Low Sunday, is allowed again until Rogation Sunday, forbidden until Trinity Sunday, and then allowed until Advent, when it goes out until 13 January comes round again. Hone prints it beside the old belief that the wedding ring goes on the fourth finger of the left hand because a vein runs from it straight to the heart.
