A straggling swallow seen before its time was no sign of spring, as the English proverb warned. Forster set it on the day when, by the Roman journals and Ovid, the first stray swallows reached Italy, a month or more before they came to England. He listed the same proverb in Greek, Latin, French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Spanish and Italian.
