Paschal wax for the cattle

Printed under 26 March

Lore and belief

Hone reprinted from Reginald Scot’s Discovery of Witchcraft a charm to keep cattle from being bewitched. At Easter the uppermost drops of the holy paschal candle were made into a small wax candle. Early on a Sunday morning it was lit and held so that it dripped between the horns and ears of the beast, with the words In nomine Patris, and the animal was singed a little there with the wax. What was left was stuck crosswise about the stall or over the door where the cattle went in and out, and they were then safe for the whole year.

and, for all that year, your cattle shall never be bewitched.
