Peterborough proclaimed its Bridge Fair at noon, with the town council, the mayor’s sergeant and javelin men marching to the bridge over the county boundary. The fair was declared open in both Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire. Hazlitt recorded the proclamation on 1 October 1901, and in 1898 the mayor followed it with a sausage and champagne lunch.
