Lore and belief

On the edge of Honiton parish is a dirty little spot called Ring in the Mire, where Honiton, Farway, Sidbury and Gittisham meet. The tradition, recorded by a former rector, was that Isabella de Fortibus, Countess of Devon, settled a quarrel between the four parishes over their bounds by riding up to the place and throwing her ring into the mud. Where it fell was to be the boundary, and so it remained. The same headstrong countess was said to have built Countess Weir across the Exe to spite the citizens of Exeter.

in a little miry place threw in a ring which she took off her finger, and said that that place should be the bounds of the four parishes
