Before the Reformation the London parish of St Mary-at-Hill bought rods for the penitential discipline of Lent. Brand, quoting the churchwardens’ accounts of St Mary-at-Hill for 1492, found twopence paid for disciplining rods, and in 1501 fourpence for painting the cross staff for Lent. He set the entries beside the Ash Wednesday commination, the service at which God’s anger against sinners was read out.
