St Piran’s Day

St Piran was said to have been born in Ireland, lived as a hermit, and settled in Cornwall, where he made his own grave and died. The Cornish tinners held that he had given their forefathers some secrets of making tin, so on his day they left their work and kept a holiday. His day is now kept as Cornwall’s national day, with his white cross on black flown across the county.
