On the first Tuesday after 27 October, Settle held a fair for selling stots, or bullocks, known as Stot or Great Tuesday. The Dialect of Craven (1828) linked it to the “grete Tewsday” in Lord Clifford’s household book of 1510. Hazlitt included it under its own heading.
