Swallow Day

The same twenty years’ journal of bird arrivals that Hone printed recorded that 15 April was called Swallow Day, because the chimney swallow arrived about then. Hone later added the old husbandry saying that a swallow flying low near the water foretold rain, and that the coming of the swallow was a true sign of spring. On the last day of the month he noted the other half of the rule: a swallow flying high promised fair weather.
