Sworn on the Horns at the Great Bed of Ware

The Great Bed of Ware, which Sir Toby Belch mentions in Twelfth Night, is a carved bed nearly eleven feet square that was for ages the wonder of an inn at Ware. Chambers says there were strange stories of parties hiring it to sleep twelve at a time to prove how much it would hold. It was long the custom for a company who came to see it to drink a toast to it from a can of beer, and a pair of horns hung in the same room on which every newcomer was sworn, as at Highgate.
