The Arbroath masons’ procession to the Maiden Castle cave

Every year on St John’s day the mason lodge of Arbroath walked in procession along the coast to a sea cave called the Maiden Castle, where they admitted their new members. The lodge had built a gate and door to the cave many years before. The minister of St Vigeans recorded the procession among the caves of his parish’s cliffs; he does not say which St John’s day, and Scottish lodges usually kept St John the Evangelist’s on 27 December.
