Chambers collects stories of judgements said to have fallen on those who sold off church bells at the Reformation. A bishop of Bangor who sold the bells of his cathedral was said to have been struck blind when he went down to watch them shipped. In the same vein, Sir Miles Partridge, who won the Jesus bells of St Paul’s in London from Henry VIII at dice, was hanged on Tower Hill not long afterwards.
