The Brereton tree

Camden wrote that it was commonly believed, and many had told him, that for some days before the death of the heir of the Brereton family a tree trunk was always seen floating in the lake beside their house. Mrs Hemans wrote verses on the omen, of an ancient oak cast on the dark water though no axe or wind had felled it. Chambers placed it among the death omens attached to particular old families.
