The same Berkshire correspondent gave the local story of how Winkfield got its church. A wicked baron who had sold himself to Satan was told by the priests to build and endow a church as penance, but twice the devil carried the new church away in the night, claiming everything the baron owned. The priests ruled against him and ordered him to put a church back on the spot, so he flew off, seized three barns and set them side by side. That, the story went, is why Winkfield church looks like three barns stuck together.
