A description of Eton College written in 1560 records that in the old days the Eton scholars elected their boy bishop on St Hugh’s Day in November, apparently so as not to clash with the college’s boy bishop on St Nicholas’s Day. The writer said the custom had lapsed, though the boy bishop had once been held in honour and his election was famous for its learned exercises. Brand thought the later Eton Montem grew out of the boy bishop’s processions.
