Exeter’s Lammas Fair was opened with a glove of immense size, stuffed and carried through the city on a very long pole dressed with ribbons and flowers, followed by music, the parish beadles and a crowd. The glove was then set on top of the Guildhall and the fair began; when the glove was taken down, the fair was over. The glove stood for the fair’s charter. Exeter still opens its Lammas Fair by carrying and raising the glove.
