The hair in the left shoe

It was a common belief that a girl who ran into the fields early in the morning to hear the first cuckoo, and took off her left shoe when she heard it, would find inside a man’s hair. It would be the same colour as the hair of the man she was to marry. Chambers gives it among the remnants of old cuckoo lore that were, or had lately been, found in different parts of England.
