The Hind’s Head on Bracknell heath

Before the road through Bracknell was made, an inn called the Hind’s Head stood alone on the heath and was said to be a haunt of robbers who murdered their guests. Country people went five miles round rather than pass near it. A Year Book correspondent told the tale of a grazier warned by the maid that his bed stood over a trapdoor into a deep well; he dropped a bundle down it, climbed out of the window and came back with neighbours to take the gang. The story ends with the bones of travellers found in the well and the inn shut up.
