The second lesson that the Prayer Book calendar appointed for 30 January told of the trial of Christ. Aubrey set it among the omens of Charles I’s fall: when Bishop Duppa read it to the King, Charles was displeased, thinking the bishop had chosen it on purpose, until Duppa showed him it was the lesson set down for the day. Charles was beheaded on 30 January 1649, and the day was afterwards kept as a fast for King Charles the Martyr.
