Hone noted from Strype that on 26 May 1555, in the reign of Mary, a gay May game was held at St Martin’s in the Fields. It had giants and hobby horses, drums and guns, morris dancers and other minstrels. It shows the parish Mayings of London still kept up in the middle of the sixteenth century.
