Charlton House, built by Sir Adam Newton opposite the church, had a marble chimney-piece said to be so highly polished that it worked like a mirror. The story went that Lord Doune saw a robbery on Blackheath, or as some said on Shooter’s Hill, reflected in it. Servants were sent out at once and the thief was caught.
