The Mordiford dragon

Lore and belief

A great green dragon was painted on the west end of Mordiford church, and generations of visitors were told it was the likeness of a real one killed in the nearby river Lugg by a condemned criminal. Chambers uses it on St George’s Day to show how a picture could become the proof of the story told about it. A local poet asked who of Herefordshire birth had not heard the tale on a winter evening.
