William Cecil, Lord Burghley, in the precepts he left to his son, wrote that he had known learned men careful not to begin any business on three Mondays of the year. One was the second Monday in August, the day Sodom and Gomorrah were said to have been destroyed. The others were the first Monday in April, when Cain was born and Abel slain, and the last Monday in December, the birthday of Judas. Burghley himself thought no day amiss for a good enterprise and left it to his son to heed the warning or not.
