On St Patrick’s Day every Irishman who cared for the day wore a bunch of shamrock in his hat, the trefoil with which the saint was said to have taught the Irish the Trinity. In Dublin there was a ball at the Castle, old women cried shamrocks for sale in every street, and children wore Patrick’s crosses, little printed pictures, pinned to their sleeves. The shamrock is still worn on the day.
