The Tanwed

A fiery omen peculiar to Wales, according to a Mr Davis quoted by Brand, was the tan-we or tanwed. It looked like a long straight glaive moving low through the air, slower than a falling star, lighting up the ground beneath it and sparkling where it came down. It foretold the death of a freeholder by falling on his land, and Davis said hardly a small landowner was buried without someone at the funeral having seen it.
