In September 870, on St Maurice’s Day, the men of Lincolnshire fought a great army of Danes at a place then called Laundon and killed three of their kings. Local tradition, following the chronicle of Ingulphus, holds that the Danes buried the three kings there and that the village has been called Threekingham ever since. A fair held on Stow Green Hill nearby was said to have grown out of the battle.
