A tomb in the north wall of Tremeirchion church was said to be that of a vicar who died about 1340 and practised magic. He had struck a bargain with the Prince of Magicians that he might use the black art all his life if his body was forfeit at death, whether buried in the church or out of it. He cheated his master by ordering that he be buried neither inside nor outside, but in the middle of the wall. Chambers remarked that so many such tombs had the same legend that the devil seemed very often outwitted by the same trick.
