Everyone knew, a Year Book writer said, how the bells of London had encouraged the young Dick Whittington as he left the city in despair, ringing out that he should turn again and be Lord Mayor of London. He turned back and was Lord Mayor, the writer thought, four times. Such bells were often taken as oracles, and a popular comic song told of a widow who asked the church bells whether to marry her servant John; they seemed to say yes, and when he proved a bad husband they rang again and said no, with the moral that as the fool thinks, so the bell clinks.
