1 July · Uplands of Wales

No longer kept

In the Welsh uplands the hay harvest was begun on the first of July. Owen noted it while explaining a Montgomeryshire cuckoo rhyme, and gave a Welsh saying that the cuckoo falls silent once she sees the first heap of hay.

It was the custom in the uplands of Wales to begin the hay harvest on the 1st of July.
