Scots often spoke of Windy Saturday, though almost nobody knew when it had been. A correspondent signing J. M. asked fifty people in 1829 before an old woman told him it was a dreadful day of wind long ago that blew down a King of Scotland. He took it to be 16 March 1286, a Saturday, when Alexander III fell to his death near Kinghorn, a day Thomas the Rhymer was said to have foretold as the windiest ever known in Scotland.
