Ripon honoured its patron St Wilfrid with an annual feast. On the Saturday after Lammas Day an effigy of the saint was brought into the town with great ceremony, preceded by music, and the people went out to meet it in memory of his return from exile. Hone’s correspondent sent a sketch of Wilfrid’s life to go with the account. The St Wilfrid procession is still held in Ripon at the start of August.
