At Nettleton, near Burton, the shoemakers kept up a practical joke on the day after Christmas called beating the lapstone. A neighbour who had not touched malt liquor for twenty years was made tipsy by half a pint of ale at his shoemaker’s at Christmas. When his wife asked where he had been, he said he had only fallen over the lapstone and hurt his leg. Ever after, the shoemakers went round beating the lapstone at the houses of all the water drinkers.
