The collect for the last Sunday before Advent begins with the words Stir up, and schoolboys called it Stir-up Sunday. Ellis recorded the rhyme they made of it, turning the prayer into a call to stir the pudding in the pot. It is still the day when many families stir the Christmas pudding.
