Our Lady’s smock at Lady Day

Cuckoo flower was called Our Lady’s smock because it first flowered about Lady Day, and its name was taken to recall the Virgin’s garment in honour of the Annunciation. Like the snowdrop, its whiteness made it an emblem of virgin purity. Forster added that the marigold was named for the rays of glory round the Virgin’s head.
