Each January, on the Friday after Hen Galan, the Old New Year, a Mari Lwyd with its singers and Aberystwyth’s Twmpath band sets off from the Promenade to sing the pwnco, the rhyming challenge, at the doors of the town’s pubs. Mari Lwyd was recorded at Aberystwyth in the nineteenth century; the present walk began as a community revival in the early 2020s and a collection is taken for the Ceredigion Bay Marine Wildlife Centre.
